Stress and Hair Loss: Adding Insult to Injury

Although stress often seems to get the undeserved blame for everything these days, it’s true that stress can cause hair loss.

There’s even a medical name for the connection between stress and hair loss. Telogen Effluvium- this is what it’s called when hair thins throughout the scalp due to sudden stress. Any unexpected shock could cause this to happen.

Some are:
  • Sudden death of a loved one
  • Job loss
  • Victim of a crime
  • Automobile accident
  • Unexpected loss of a significant other
Another phrase, Alopecia Areata, is used to refer to hair loss that occurs in patches of the scalp for no known reason. When this happens, it’s most likely to be caused by general stress. And it’s harder to nail down the exact reason.

So what’s a person to do? Well, the first step is to make an effort to determine just what it is that has you so stressed out. Maybe it’s your job or your love relationship. Maybe your kids aren’t driving you nuts, but making your hair fall out.

Any of these things and many others can intermingle to have you so stressed that you suffer hair loss. Which tends to just make matters worse. So you really want to understand where your stress is coming from. To help do this, ask yourself these questions:
  • Am I feeling out of control about something?
  • Have I experienced recent changes in my health?
  • Do I feel overworked?
  • Am I worrying about finances?
  • Is something from the past troubling me?
  • Are my life and work in balance?

Once you have an idea of what’s causing your stress and hair loss, take steps, if possible to reduce or eliminate it. That’s always easier said than done. Still, even though you can’t erase stress from your life completely, there are many things you can do to feel better about life in general. This has the happy side effect of making you feel less stressed as well. For instance, you may want to try:
  • Exercise
  • Eating better, more balanced meals
  • Yoga
  • Getting more rest
  • Reading a book
  • Seeing a movie
  • Visiting with friends
  • Trying a new hobby
  • Keeping a journal
  • Having a massage

Above all, relax. In this day and age, this usually takes a great deal of effort—and often some training too. Still, deep breathing exercises are one of the cheapest, most effective methods to help you relax. But you have to do them again and again for them to work which means you have to slow down—and that’s a good thing to do when you’re suffering from stress.

And most important, you should remember to laugh. No, there’s nothing funny about stress and hair loss. Either of them is enough to make anyone cry. But a strange, wonderful thing happens when people laugh. Endorphins start swimming around in the brain, and suddenly things just look better. Even that head with its thinning hair that you see in the mirror.

When that happens, you know you’re on your way to improving both your stress and hair loss. Plus, it doesn’t cost you a thing. And that should definitely give you something to smile about.
